Post Road Gallery Fine American Decorative Arts George Washington Figure White Metal and Painted 36-1/2 inches tall Circa 1900? A very similar figure is illustrated in Treasury of American Design by Clarence P. Hornung, Harry Abrams Publisher, 1950, page 795 of Vol. 2. Hornug states that this pose is based on John Quincy Adams Ward's figure of Washington outside Federal Hall at the corner of Wall St and Nassau in Manhattan. (Formerly the New York Sub-Treasury Building) The statue portrays Washington taking the first Oath of Office. This piece was probably created as a hitching post. |
