This painting was part of the collection of American Paintings owned by William T. Evans sold at the American Art Galleries on February 1, 1900, lot number 109. The AAG catalog described this painting as "A pretty little girl of seven or eight years sitting in a big chair, hugs her cat in her arms and seems very happy in her possession. Crowded in beside the arm of the chair is her rag dolly. The picture is painted with great skill, and is in every way pleasing". In 1908 Evans gave 40 paintings to the newly formed the
National Gallery in Washington, DC. This donation became the core of the museum's collection of American Art. The catalog of the Evans sale that included this painting can be read online
