Ruth Burgess was a native of Montpelier Vermont but moved to New York City. There she became a member of and President of the New York Women's Art Club between 1905 and 1910. She studied at the Arts Students League under Kenyon Cox, Gari Melchers, J. Carroll Beckwith and George De Forest Brush. Later she had three solo shows at Milch Galleries in 1928, 1930 and 1931. She also showed at the National Academy of Design and American Watercolor Society. This painting retains it's original frame and Milch Galleries label.
