James Lippitt Clark worked for the American Museum of Natural History in New York and as an artist specialized in animal sculptures. He must have had an affinity for rhinos becasue he visited the subject several times. Early in his career he modeled a larger Rhinoceros which Teddy Roosevlet purchased and is still at the Roosevelt home, Sagamore Hill in Oyster Bay, NY. In 1948 Clark went on a museum sponsored trip to Africa where it can be assumed that he did the drawings and preliminary work for this piece. According to the Roman Bronze Works records, only three castings of this model were made.
