Jean L. Gerome
French, 1824-1904)

"The Expiring Eagle of Waterloo"
Circa 1900

Numbered Y827 and impressed SIOT PARIS
Gilt bronze, mounted on an integral stone base: 28 inches.

This piece is an allegory to the heroism of the French soldiers at the Battle of Waterloo, The injured, yet defiant eagle holds a broken staff with a Napoleonic "N"

The Eagle was cast in two sizes. One can be seen in a period photograph is the salon of the famous Sarah Bernhardt.

At this time we have "La Joueuse de Boules" or "Dancer with Balls", also by Gerome and in a gilt patina.
