Moore was a deaf mute and family friend of Thomas Eakins . Eakins and Moore studied together in Gérome's atelier and traveled to Spain in 1869. It was probably the influence of Gerome and the Moorish elemetns in Spain which gave Moore his the inspiration for Orientalist subject matter. (No pun intended)
