After serving in the Civil War with the 17th Connecticut Volunteers he moved to Philadelphia and studied art in the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. In the 1880s he returned to the Bridgeport area. It is at this time that he painted this still life. The banjo Is a wonderful piece of Americana as subject matter is somewhat rare in trompe-l'oiel image.
