| Ives is considered one of the premier American neo-classical sculptors of the 19th century. According to a checklist of the artist's work compiled by Ives' grand-daughter he executed two versions of "Cupid". Prior to discovering this piece, neither was known completed in stone. A drawing for this piece as seen from the back is in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and can be seen on their website.
