American Sculpture
Frederick W. MacMonnies
(American, 1863-1937)
"Sulking Cupid"
Circa 1905
31-5/8 inches high
Bronze with marble and bronze base
Original foundry pin model
Provenance: Marjorie Young, Grand Daughter of the Artist
This is a very rare bronze by MacMonnies. Unlike the "Bacchante" or "Pan of Rohallion" this model was never cast in large editions. A period photo of the dining room of the Knickerbocker Hotel in New York City shows a larger example of this model along with a companion piece. It was probably designed specifically for that location.
