Sellstedt immigrated to the United States from Sweden settling in Buffalo, NY in 1842. Although he initially sought work as a sailor he soon found steady employment as a portrait painter. He became an esteemed member of the thriving merchant city's social elite and artistic community that included Thomas Le Clair and William Holbrook Beard. In 1904 Sellstedt published an autobiography, From Forecastle to Academy: Sailor and Artist.
